Let's Learn About Castles

Webster’s Dictionary defines the word Castle as a large fortified building or set of buildings, a retreat safe against intrusion or invasion. For the purposes of this website, we are going to learn about the various parts of the castle, the construction design of most castles and the history of many of the castles in this world.

How many of us as kids have pretended to be a princess in a castle or to be a boy with a sword fighting off intruders in our imaginary castle (usually a fort or hideout - but our own castle in our minds on that day).  Castles have created dreams and adventures for us all. Many people love to look back at history and act and dress and go to festivals celebrating that time in life.  Think Renaissance festivals and even the Society for Creative Anachronism. The grand stately castle is part of that very important era. Hollywood knows the allure of castles and the history of that time and Hollywood has created many great movies with castles in them.  To name a few, how about Lord of the Rings, or Robin Hood, Harry Potter, Prince of Persia and many more.  Watching these movies brings the audience into that era and the wonder of it all.

As travelers we have the ability to visit some of these castles, some of which are open to the public, some are in ruins and some are still private residences. For most of us, the closest we will get to see a real castle is through books and websites such as this one. Learn About Castles.com will share the history of many castes, pictures and if the castle is open to visitors, we will share any info we have available so you can plan your next vacation and go visit one.

So, let's go on a journey together and Learn About Castles.
